WE DID IT JOE. I have completed Seattle Summer Book Bingo. 23 books. #booksky #reading #seattle #bookbingonw2025

Belatedly logging completion of The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King for the Intergenerational Friendship square.

That gave me 19 books covering 21 squares with one lonely bingo, which I'm pretty sure is mathematically a record.

Found family for Demon Copperhead ❤️ #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle
What can I say? I love a down-on-his-luck teenage boy with a heart of gold. Demon Copperhead is my new darling, alongside Holden Caulfield. #booksky #reading

Last audiobook for #BookBingoNW2025 is Who's Afraid of Gender by Judith Butler for the "Recommended by a library worker" square (via a @spl.org 's best of 2024 list)

I completed my #BookBingoNW2025 blackout with a day to spare with The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope for the Monsters square.

We are getting close to the end of Summer Book Bingo, so I grabbed two novellas from @spl.org! My choices for "book with a flower on the cover or in the title" and "book suggested by a library worker" #booksky #reading #library #seattle #BookBingoNW2025

My choice for BIPOC Historical Nonfiction #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle
Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara paints a damning picture of the horrific human rights abuses in the Congo where nearly all of the cobalt needed for rechargeable batteries is mined. The price of having a phone in your hand is paid for, literally, in the blood of children. #booksky #reading #nonfiction

Thanks to an anonymous @thestorygraph.com user, I read Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K. Reilly for the Hope square of #BookBingoNW2025. Literally laughed out loud several times.

My monster book 🥴 #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle
I've been hesitating to post about this book. I want to share what I'm reading, but honestly, I was not a fan of this one. But I figured, let's turn this into a conversation about taste and discernment. How do I judge "good" and "bad" writing?

Pacific Northwest Nature square:

Puget Sound Whales for Sale: The Fight to End Orca Hunting by Sandra Pollard

Gives a good idea of the scale of orca hunting (and what happened to them) from about 1965-75. Kind of sensationalist writing style but still touching.

Oh btw, my censorship square is 1984 by George Orwell #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle #booksky #reading
Trying to catch up on the books that I never read in high school. Am I supposed to be laughing about how similar 1984 is to our current AI hell-hole technocracy?

Finished my #BookBingoNW2025 blackout this morning, even with reading many books that didn't count, even with reading four big books for the one big book square. I don't understand it either.

For the #BookBingoNW2025 Intergenerational Friendship category, I read Installment Immortality by Seanan McGuire.
August 9, 2025 at 3:36 AM
For the Grief square of #BookBingoNW2025:

Red Paint (The Ancestral Autobiography of a Coast Salish Punk) by Sasha taqʷšəblu LaPointe

(Also fits the Washington Book Award square for the non-SPL/SAL version of the board.)

For my disability square, it's Year of the Tiger by Alice Wong, of course! #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle

bsky.app/profile/drey...
Very nearly one-shot Year of the Tiger: An Activist's Life by @sfdirewolf.bsky.social ! Finished in about a 25-hour period. Couldn't put it down!

As a non-disabled person, Wong has me reevaluating what I consider to be truly living well.

For my dystopia square, although it feels like reality #BookBingoNW2025 #seattle

Racism, anti-chinese sentiment, censorship, police violence. It's not a dystopia. It's the USA. Whatever happened to our missing hearts?

My Big Book for #BookBingoNW2025 is The Silmarillion, specifically the audiobook read by Andy Serkis.

This edition includes a new-to-me letter from Tolkien to a friend, outlining the story, mentioning the concept of "subcreators" like Feanor.
