The issue is to prevent drying out. Land snails lose water from their lungs and skin. There are anatomical, physiological & behavioural mechanisms to reduce this. (12/12)

Although this resembles Pleuropoma from posts 1 & 2, this is a lung-breathing land snail. The shells are similar - white, high-spired, but there is no operculum and there are four tentacles, the upper two having the eyes at the tip not the base.

The animal is white and the tentacles are steel grey.

Lovely! This snail has a rounded shell banded in bright yellow, black and white. Very swish! The body is black. This species is actually polymorphic or pseudopolymorphic (I've forgotten which and its not important for today's purpose) but do look them up, because they are gorgeous.

Note that some classifications put them in Helminthoglyptidae but I'm following Molluscabase and iNaturalist. Some day I'll dig into the classification of the American families but not on a Sunday lunchtime.

Look at this little hairy snail! That's certainly what the opilionid (harvestman) in the background is doing. This is a weeny snail with a dark brown shell that is covered in numerous long hairs. The hairs are projections of the periostracum so are made of protein, not calcium carbonate like the main part of the shell.

What’s the difference between a snail and a slug? Mostly the size of the shell. A snail (generally) has a shell large enough to completely enclose the body. This is Polymita picta from Cuba just sticking its head out from under the shell. (1/8)
