Fish feel fear and pain like we do.

Mammals that evolved on trees in forests don’t need to eat fish for health. Walnuts offer omega 3 with fiber and without dangerous toxins due to bioaccumulation & biomagnification.

Every time I hear this, I think of biomagnification: toxins concentrating higher up in the food chain.

That’s our real national symbol—a poisoned apex predator, majestic in form, rotting in function.

My dad used to say that America was like the eagle that represents it, it has a left and a right wing and both are required to fly. But without the heart in the center, it would just die.

Never more true than it is today.

Due to its persistence in the environment, DDT built up in the fatty tissues of animals and humans through bioaccumulation and biomagnification. In the mid-1900s, nearly all Americans had detectable levels of DDT in their systems. That's just one of many linked to cancer and other health issues.

As much as this is an Ignoble prize waiting to happen, if done correctly (big "if") it's surprisingly useful data on aquatic invertebrate neurochemistry and bioavailability/biomagnification in the food chain.

We know shockingly little about it all because they're a non-model organism.

0.5% of our brain is plastic. Up 50% in only 8 years. In the meantime, dementia has overtaken heart disease and cancer as the leading cause of death.

Bioaccumulate and biomagnification are a deadly cocktail. Every hour that passes treating symptoms makes the risks exponentially worse now.
Dementia has become the leading cause of death. We see 10 times more #microplastic in the brains of people who die from #dementia.

But "evidence does NOT confirm health risks".

Is this some form of dementia in itself?

This means that #biomagnification too gets worse each year. This means that eating livestock or fish or anything with flesh, gets more dangerous exponentially now.

Why is life becoming exponentially riskier by the hour?
What is #bioaccumulation and #biomagnification? 🧵

One easy way you can support the salmon stock is to simply not to eat them. Most sealife is contaminated with heavy metals from biomagnification and farmed salmon infested with parasites.

You can eat the same things they eat to get omegas and DHA - algae and seaweeds.

After Rachel Carson’s courageous “Silent Spring” exposé back in 1962, surely by now we’ve learned not to release bioaccumulating toxins into ecosystems.

No, of course not.

“Results suggest biomagnification of PFAS from soil, mushrooms, and berries to bank voles, from mushrooms to ungulates and […]

It tastes really fucking good, that’s what’s going awn. Enjoy it.

You do have to limit it over time because of mercury and biomagnification and stuff. But craving it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. You just have good taste.

Biomagnification is a big problem. The toxins build up in the tissues of organisms lower in the food web (like oysters), and when another organism eats a substantial quantity of them, it can absolutely have lethal consequences. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not happening.

"Compost the rich."

(Mustn't eat them to avoid biomagnification issues)

It's biomagnification: plants with deep roots absorb tiny amounts of radiation from groundwater, concentrate it, then the rabbits eat them, one more concentration step then wasps eat the carrion and here you are.

At Hanford they hunt for radioactive coyote dung to find contaminated groundwater.

Mangrove ecosystems are increasingly threatened by halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs), posing a significant threat to resident arthropods, including spiders and insects. Spider webs, due to their...

Lab grown meat could be the future if it can be made en masse with cheap prices .. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social writes about it quite a bit. Toxins also build up in the food chain - biomagnification - and so meat is toxic as well as bad for the climate.

🔹 Bioconcentration Factor
🔹 Ready Biodegradability
🔹 Daphnia magna LC₅₀
🔹 Fathead minnow LC₅₀

More endpoints will be added soon.

The science on blood plasma use for "rejuvenation" purposes is actually really interesting. There are some biological markers that show it can (in certain respects) reduce "biological age."

That said, biomagnification of toxins is also a thing.
