Circled part of Malaysian Budget 2025 speech official document, page 107, that talks about specific allocations of education assistance programmes: "Hostel food assistance, 2 billion ringgit" "Rancangan Makanan Tambahan, known as RMT, 870 million ringgit compared to 784 ringgit previously. RMT shall benefit 860000 students and provide opportunities to the local food suppliers." Rancangan Makanan Tambahan translates to Supplementary Food Programme, essentially a free school meals programme for disadvantaged families. This works out to about just 5 ringgit per lunch over 190 school days in Malaysia. Food and drinks in restaurants at the cheapest usually costs 8 to 15 ringgit depending on which state you're in. Literally nowhere in the document or from the government does it go into details specifically on who or how many benefits from the hostel food assistance. The amount of public boarding school students is likely less than 100,000 considering that 2025 enrolment for the two major school systems are around 10k students each. The 2024 budget for Supplementary Food Programme or free school meals for disadvantaged elementary students was 784,295,100, or 785 million ringgit. In 2025 this is increased to just 869,656,100, or roughly 870 million ringgit, a 10.9% increase. Public hostel students, which likely only make up one-eight of the estimated 860,000 disadvantaged students for the free school meals programme, somehow has 2.4 times more budget both in 2025 and 2024.
