#BallotMarkingDevices
FIELD REPORTS FROM GA: I warned you election officials would try to sabotage court ordered
#HandMarkedPaperBallots pilots. Observers report needlessly
cumbersome check-in for HMPB only.
It takes 5x longer than for
#BallotMarkingDevices voting. SEOs will report HMPBs take longer.

I'm completing a functional analysis of the differences between #BallotMarkingDevices and the old #DRE voting machines. Bottom line: BMDs are functionally speaking equivalent to DREs with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT). The claim that BMDs dont remember votes is false.

All-BMD Jusrisdictions pay 2x those with #HandMarkedPaperBallots plus BMDs only for voters who cannot mark their ballots by hand. This coupled with security and verification concerns for #BallotMarkingDevices drives counties to avoid machine marking

Off to observe some polling places today. Will be looking at #HandMarkedPaperBallots and #BallotMarkingDevices especially looking for evidence that voters verify machine marked ballots. Municipal not statewide not exactly predictive of 2020. The court ordered pilots are impt tho.

Nothing cheeky about it. The added complexity is costly, error-prone, and vulnerable to hacking. It does not add much that cannot be done better manually. Just compare voting on #HandMarkedPaperBallots vs #BallotMarkingDevices

FIELD REPORT FROM GA: Observations from polling places ranging from tiny to cavernous. In all cases, election officials and the general public could easily see voter selections on Dominion #BallotMarkingDevices. Voters complained, officials hovered, secret ballots compromised.

Overheard at today's GA State Election Board Meeting:
Statements from blind voters about Dominion's super-accessible #BallotMarkingDevices. Apparently not. One angry voter said she feels disenfranchised. "It just keeps talking, telling you to push blue button! What? I'm blind!"

Apropos of nothing: it’’s funny how the same ppl who are quick to insult/accuse you of actively working to disenfranchise disabled voters because you oppose universal-use #BallotMarkingDevices also complain you are insulting their integrity when you ask them to disclose conflicts

#BallotMarkingDevices vendors claim falsely () that "timing" marks on #HandMarkedPaperBallots r like bar codes 4 encoding votes. @beckerdavidj (who has blocked me) then repeats to @GaSecofState. Pop quiz: Encode this as timing (extra credit 4 definition)

I’m also concerned that #BallotMarkingDevices whose security depends on voter error detection rates exceeding professional proof readers are being used in public elections before this question is answered. (8/13)

Considerable traffic thanks to @danwallach and @philipbstark about whether parallel testing addresses the security flaws of #BallotMarkingDevices . This brand-new paper by Stark

says that's unlikely in practice & even if so, would not be actionable.

The best explainer for #HandMarkedPaperBallots vs #BallotMarkingDevices by Wisconsin’s Karen McKim. She tracked down claims that BMD advocates make to see if their data actually exists. It doesn’t. Includes illustrations 4 struggling legislators/EB members

The 94,000 "lost votes" that Sec. Cox serves up as a reason for GA's #BallotMarkingDevices are less than meets the eye. HB316 sponsors called on her to support claim that #HandMarkedPaperBallots were unsecure. It's not true. Stay tuned.

#VotingVillage2019 panel at 6pm this afternoon: status of litigation in GA aimed at challenging constitutionality of insecure electronic voting. I will talk about evidence of DRE malfunctions and Essential Security Flaw of #BallotMarkingDevices that @GaSecofState wants 2 buy.

A reminder to my election integrity colleagues that no one is immune from the disease of substituting belief in their cause for actual scientific work. Demos, pressers, indignation and moral superiority will not make the case for #BallotMarkingDevices

FIELD REPORTS FROM GA: Observers say that the screens on
Dominion #BallotMarkingDevices are so large that voter selections can be read easily from across the room, a clear compromise of secret ballot.
