Early 1986 I was at a bus stop on Seven Sisters Rd heading home from goth club Catacombs when I was approached by a teenager who offered to take me to a warehouse all-nighter if I paid his entrance. Turned out to be this - he went off to join friends, I danced 'til dawn, backcombed hairdo and all.

1992, we'd gone to visit a friend at the college, have beers, and then later down to Newport to see The Mission, we were gothed up in our finery with big backcombed hair etc.
ALL of the high street shops locked their doors on us! And refused entry. The only shop we got into was a record store.

That was UBER-chic. The first wine bar opened near me in the early 80s. I went in in all my backcombed glamour and asked what wines they had.

Also like fuck did anyone without a professional stylist have that level of shiny bouncy hair, we barely had conditioner and my hair was like a giant triangle of frizz until I entered the backcombed era (aka frizz but vertical).
