On #AskanArchivist Day we received the Q if we have any fun photos of Robert F. Kennedy, Sr., and we do!
Our absolute favorite is this one that long-time S&S photographer Gus Schuettler snapped of the then U.S. Attorney General at the Heidelberg University auditorium, June 27, 1964.

#ArchivesMonth: Here's a question we got from #AskAnArchivist Day!
“I would like to know my grandfather’s service record and where he was in WW2.” ——Robert Lee Quinlan of Detroit, Mi.
Thanks, Robert! We often get this question so we’re happy to answer it here.

On #AskAnArchivist Day, you asked for a Marilyn Monroe photo? We deliver!
We only have photo prints as the negatives “mysteriously” disappeared a long, long time ago, but this is one of our favorites…just look at the faces of those GIs!

Did you know that archives are more than just "old stuff?" Archives hold essential evidence of our democracy, help secure our rights under the law, and provide the means to hold our leaders accountable. #AskAnArchivist

Did you know that access to government records was one of the many grievances enumerated in the Declaration of Independence. That's right, transparency and access to government archives and records has been a paramount value of the US from day one! #AskAnArchivist

hmmmm. I (the staff member running this account) do a lot of our public-facing stuff, like exhibits, providing research assistance (reference), and working with classes learning how to do archival research. I usually leave it there and answer any follow-up questions as they arrive. #AskAnArchivist

How do we decided what to digitize? Most of the digitization work we currently do is for preservation reasons. #AskAnArchivist
The original negative seen here suffers from a preservation issue called "silvering," where the silver particles rise to the top of the gelatin layer of the film.

Happy #AskAnArchivist day to those who celebrate! My most frequently asked reference question is, can I use this photo in my [book, article, etc.]: repository.duke.edu/dc/wlmpc/maddc07063 (The answer is, you have to ask Alix Kates Shulman for permission, which I can facilitate.)

The answer to that changes frequently, but currently favorites include an oral history of a community theater troupe, an 1869 letter documenting a transcontinental railroad trip, and watercolor sketchbooks showing the mining boom communities of the late 19thC. #AskAnArchivist
