The Carboniferous Period, had oxygen levels of 35% compared to today’s 21% – a condition that was particularly favorable for arthropod gigantism. Insects like the Meganeura, dragonfly-like creatures, boasted a wingspan of over two feet purely because of this oxygen supercharge.

This is how they look like now. The colors are inspired by Queen Alexandra's birdwing, but I still haven't decided on the patterns on the wings. Also, I added them proboscis like in bees, but it will work more like a tongue

This was such a fascinating and uplifting story of the evolution of a collection. What Chris has managed to achieve for the Oregon State Arthropod Collection is remarkable. 🥹👏 #ECN2025

Fellow arthropod fans: This is even more amazing than the headline describes! The researchers say it’s “the first evidence of colonial behavior in two common spider species.”

The review also highlights potential applications of Cardinium in controlling arthropod pests and disease vectors, while emphasizing the need for further research to understand Cardinium's physiology, environmental stress responses, and host interactions.

Reduction of land use increases invertebrate abundance in grasslands.
Cutting mowing intensity boosted invertebrate numbers by up to 99% over 3 years, showing how land-use reduction supports insects & ecosystem functions. 🌿

I got this most superlative work from @guttertongue.bsky.social! Thank you so much!!!
Tasmorei realized too late that, though former demon she might be, she was way in over her head. The most vicious among the infernal host were known as 'heroslayers', and it was a sobriquet well earned.

It is not necessary to be large to be a perfectly good arthropod (or mollusc, come to that).

OBVIOUSLY my favorite part is the Bug Collecting Matching Game. It lights up if you match the arthropod to a good collecting method for it.
