An interesting feature about this fungus and a few (but not all) Arrhenia is the lack of gills which is quite unusual for a basidiomycete fungus (the group containing most fungi you and I call 'mushrooms'). 🍄

🍄‍🟫 Another parasitic fungus that frequents mossy walls (photos from back in December):

I've identified this one as Arrhenia retiruga, with the common name Small Moss Oysterling according to #iNaturalist. Seems to like the common cushion moss #Grimmia as a host which it parasites upon.

I was going for genera in Hygrophoraceae; Hygrophoris, Hygrocybe, etc. Even worked some Arrhenia in at the bottom. Thankfully, my illustrations no longer need be accurate. 😁

A fungus photo a day: The brown goblet/Arrhenia epichysium is not rare but for some reason yesterday is only the second time I’ve found it. #fungifriends #fungi #mycology #naturephotography

Arrhenia "sp-CAO4"
An undescribed blue-green Arrhenia that can be seen in chaparral habitats in California. Known so far from 2 sequenced collections by Stu and myself. It spans from LA to the Bay and likely further.
Saw on a late starting New Year's Day hike in the Oakland Hills. #mushrooms

Back in the graveyard before Christmas, another mini-mushroom, Moss Navel (Arrhenia rickenii), hiding amongst the moss on a tombstone. If you don't seek, you don't find. #fungifriends #fungi #mycology

Interesting-looking fungus growing from moss atop a tombstone in Doddington churchyard. I took it for dead leaf at first. ObsIdentify says it's Arrhenia spathulata. #KentNature #fungus #fungi @caringforgodsacre.bsky.social

Arrhenia retiruga I think, quite common but how many people spot it? It can be found even in built-up areas on moss-covered walls. Funnily it got locally redlisted as probably regionally extinct in Czechia in 2006, I think it got found even before the finished red list got published.

Based on that I’d suggest Arrhenia- I’ve seen Arrhenia rickenii on mossy walls around Norwich.

Old mossy lawns around University of Liverpool’s city campus yielded some interesting #fungi. Particularly the black cups next to old tree stumps. Any help with ID would be very welcome #fungifriday
