In 1984 the Arnolfini and the Bristol Ferry “Margaret” were featured on a stamp which celebrated the urban renewal the city had undergone in the years since harbour closed as a working dock.

I have experienced magical and transformative moments of culture in Bristol. The Wills Girls by Show of Strength…Adventures in Motion Pictures at Arnolfini; the ship appearing in Up the Feeder Down the Mouth in Bristol docks, perhaps the most magical moment of all…. More in the link.

The bedhead was deep dark wood, touched with gilt. A golden fringe hung from the canopy. In sine ways this bed reminded me of the glowing bed by which van Eyck ennobled the portrait of Jan Arnolfini and his wife.

Of all the minerals in the #OreCup for my art/physics use voting scheme copper wins hands down!

Ok, molybdenum has some applications as catalyst/electrodes/in alloys but copper is the conductor par excellence.

In art we have all of bronze & copper sculpture & many blue/green pigments! Vote copper!

I vote for minerals for their art & physics applications & the new #OreCup is making it hard pitting 2 strong contenders against each other! Found worldwide Copper & Galena have been used since antiquity (see early Galena smelting via Agricola). Both used for pigments (verdigris in this Van Eyck)…

Highlights from the Catenary Wires on Saturday were the gorgeous Things I Love, with its namecheck for The Fall and @heavenlyamelia.bsky.social’s vocal as beautifully, perfectly fragile and tremulous as I remember from that first gig at the Arnolfini back in 2014, and Mirrorball, surely the [1/4]

Focusing on what's clearly the most important part of the famed Arnolfini Portrait: the dog.

Jan van Eyck painted every hair on that dog's coat, and frankly I can't even see the humans in this work, because the dog is perfect.

Painted in 1434, Bruges. #NationalGallery #dog

The President of Italy is paying a state visit to Belgium. During the banquet, the King of the Belgians referred to the very old ties between both countries and even flagged Tommaso Portinari and Giovanni Arnolfini who settled in 15th c Bruges.

“El matrimonio Arnolfini” de Jan van Eyck no retrata una boda, sino una despedida. La simbología revela que Costanza había muerto, y cada detalle —vela, espejo, postura— convierte la obra en un tributo fúnebre.

The Arnolfini Portrait proves that scale is not the measure of presence.
A small surface can contain whole architectures of looking,
worlds folded inward until the gaze itself becomes monumental.
