I agree with your general sentiments, but AI (at least LLMs, but, to an extent, everything built on ML) is notoriously terrible at mathematics, both in terms of not being able to accurately do simple arithmetic and also in terms of being bad at the forms of induction and deduction used in proofs.

Are we talking about five-year olds? That's how I understood (but did not believe) the original post. In that case, I would use the word "arithmetic" instead of "math". I remember one of my reports from back then and apparently I was very good with rods. I went on to become good at mathematicss.

No concept of basic arithmetic.

this is obviously stupid at many different levels but also there's no way any Pre-K student is "good at math;" at best we could say they are good at arithmetic, but that means very little as it's the thing computers are exceedingly good at already

(or at least they were before LLMs)
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Yes, of course, I never implied otherwise, this applies to many other such things as basic communication skills, arithmetic and exercise: schools existing as a great equaliser and formaliser doesn't negate them being learned and used at home.

Imagine being a tech bro (derogatory) and not knowing the difference between arithmetic & math
November 12, 2025 at 3:53 AM
Yeah, literally no way to know if he's actually good at math yet. Arithmetic is different than math. Math actually requires creativity. Hope the kid turns out alright w/ his tech psycho mom

I feel like I missed out. I was excellent at math in 1991. Just breezed through GCSE. This has had zero impact on my life (positive or negative) since.

(I’m terrible at arithmetic in my head but all the other math stuff? I was great.)

Pre-k report cards for arithmetic. No. My son had social/emotional struggles in High school. The school was brilliant. They said “he is a smart kid. We are not worried about his math.. he can pick that back up. We need to be sure he is emotionally able to move forward right now.” Deans list now.

Doing pre-K arithmetic assignments quickly is… well let's just say I'm guessing the teacher felt like they needed something nice to say about this kid. It doesn't generalize to being "good at math," to say the least

Donny can't do basic arithmetic, so he won't get it.

January 1st, 2030, I believe.

(I may be off by a year, arithmetic isn't my strong point)

Oooh sorry, accounting is just arithmetic. They meant, like, linear algebra.

tbh this is how feel about modern basic math instruction.
I'm seeing the tricks that I developed much later on to help me do basic arithmetic being taught as foundational and it's been *hell*.
I had only figured this stuff out because I had YEARS of competent algebraic math education to support it.

Dunno how it is in other schools but my kid was doing basic algebraic stuff (3 + x = 6) at the beginning of K! TK they ended with basic arithmetic and counting to 100

My algorithm analysis professor made the point as he gleefully watched us struggle to absorb his lessons 😂

He'd even ask us "were you good at math in high school? No! You weren't! You were good at arithmetic."

It was all in good fun. He's a brilliant mathematician and a better professor

Republicans are very bad at time & arithmetic.
November 12, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Simple arithmetic.
November 12, 2025 at 12:14 AM
Thank you for saying that. Americans routinely say math when they just mean arithmetic.
November 12, 2025 at 12:14 AM
I know this isn't the point, but it rubs me raw they're circle jerking about him being good at math without understanding that arithmetic isn't math.

He's learning arithmetic. And it's not to knock him, it's good actually!

But these people are high on the smell of their own dumb ass farts.
