Another SPECTACULAR #AdriftLab #WritingRetreat, this time with the brilliant and hilarious @amycsteel.bsky.social. In 4 days we finished TWO new papers on #bushfires and #cyclones. So much love for this collaborative and efficient approach to writing!!

As if Alix doesn’t have enough papers (5 data chapters + 9 bonus papers - yes, that’s 16 in 3 years!), soon we’ll gather for another of our famous #WritingRetreats to smash out 2 new papers. Can’t wait to drink tea, eat 🍰, laugh & write for 5 days with our talented team 😍 #AdriftLab #seabirds

#ornithology friends in south-eastern #Australia: please be on the look-out for #seabirds on beaches. Sadly, they will probably start washing up in ~2 weeks… #CitizenScience #BeachedBirds #AdriftLab #OzBirds
Multiple species of #shearwater have begun arriving in Australian waters after completing their southward migration. We need your help recording if/when #seabirds start washing up on your local beaches #citizenscience

⭐#NewPaper alert⭐ Dr Megan Grant's last chapter of her #AdriftLab #PhD thesis focuses on the key role #seabirds play in transporting nutrients from the ocean to their breeding sites (in this case, #LordHoweIsland)

Seabirds Enhance Primary Producer and Consumer Isotope Signals on a Sub‐Tropical Island
Many seabird populations are decline, this means fewer marine-derived nutrients are being deposited on islands. On Lord Howe Island, soil collected from active shearwater colonies contained elevated ....

In 2017, #AdriftLab published a paper on #plastic accumulating on a remote island. A few days later we discovered it had been featured in a skit about the #kardashians on #saturdaynightlive 😳🤩 Check it out via the link below! ⬇️

Last week HRH King Charles III learned about all the amazing research happening at #AdriftLab & the remarkable #birds we’re so lucky to work with. King Charles shares our teams’ passion for environmental #conservation. We’re hoping for a dinner invite soon 😉 #WPY60 @nhm-london.bsky.social

New research from #AdriftLab found:
🪹 100% of sampled #GreatBowerbird bowers contain plastic decorations
🐦 Most bowers had >250 debris items
♻️ Common items: lids, clothes pegs & tile spacers
📿 #entanglement in ribbons & wire is a concern
🏞️ Bowers in a #NationalPark still had high debris loads

#NewPaper from #AdriftLab
🔹 #shearwaters exposed to #Mercury & #PCBs have significantly reduced #thyroid #hormone levels
🔹Worrying bc thyroid hormones regulate vital functions (eg. development & growth) & are part of the mechanism underlying migration #seabirds

While undertaking fieldwork on #LordHoweIsland this month, the #AdriftLab team completed 21 #cleanups of four beaches. In total, we removed 2943 #plastics weighing 33kg (carried on our bicycles). All debris was sorted & uploaded to Australia’s national database #AMDI

Few people get to see these gorgeous, charismatic birds & this is something our #AdriftLab team struggles with. You can’t care about what you don’t know about, so…how do we (a small, poorly funded team) share the magic of these birds with the world? Thankfully, there are photographers like Ingrid 🙏
Take a moment to see the beauty in the eye of this young #shearwater, only moments before it took its first-ever flight into the Big Blue (and flew 15,000 km to Japan!) 💙

Alarming and heartbreaking that the amount of plastic being found in shearwaters on Lord Howe Island is just getting worse!

This lovely little paper originated from one of our famous #AdriftLab #WritingRetreat which we held on #LordHoweIsland last October. Over a one-week period, we wrote and analysed the data together in between eating cake, drinking tea, cracking (bad) jokes & catching #seabirds

If you live in SE Australia, please watch for beach-washed #seabirds & send your observations to #AdriftLab ⬇️
Two #seabirds with metal leg bands were reported to #AdriftLab this week during #BeachedBird surveys (these are ongoing, please keep sending us data!). The #CitizenScientists took excellent photos which ensured we could read the full number & report it to the banding office #ABBBS
