Statement from ASPI on Trump-Xi meeting
The long-awaited Trump-Xi meeting was an important step in stabilizing our bilateral relationship by turning down the temperature on recent escalatory actions by both countries. However, the announced outcomes do little to resolve underlying structural issues that are at the heart of our bilateral economic tensions, including excess capacity, excessive subsidies, and unfair trade practices. As such, this truce may be short lived. Unlike the Phase One trade agreement concluded during Trump’s first term, this time around Beijing drove a hard bargain insisting on getting paid for every concession it made, particularly regarding reducing tariffs and unwinding shipping fees. This is in sharp contrast to the other trade agreements that Trump has concluded in recent days, which were heavily tilted in the U.S. favor. Trump has met his match with China, which has shown that two can play at this game. It’s welcome news that Beijing agreed to hold off implementing its recently announced sweeping rare earth export restrictions, but we should expect Beijing to use this threat as a hammer over the U.S.' head, making U.S. tariff threats less credible and more costly going forward.

Deine Comics helfen mir auf ganz verschiedenen Ebenen, erlebtes zu verarbeiten, einzuordnen, zu reflektieren und machmal einfach das Gefühl nicht alleine auf dem Planeten Aspi zu sein. Danke das du die Welt bunter machst und mit deiner Arbeit für die dringend benötigte Aufklärung sorgst!
