On 20 March 2025, Trump’s NIH terminated a grant exploring structural racism as a second hit on APOL1 in kidney disease.

The majority of the patients on the study’s stakeholder advisory board heard this as: ‘Your life does not matter to us’.

You can feel perfectly fine—and still have early, silent kidney damage.
APOL1 gene variants raise risk for Black, Afro-Caribbean & Afro-Latino communities.
Don’t wait for symptoms.
Ask your doctor for eGFR + uACR tests.

COVID-19 can trigger severe kidney damage by indirectly injuring podocytes through systemic inflammation, especially in people with APOL1 high-risk genotypes.

This leads to collapsing glomerulopathy (COVAN), marked by rapid kidney failure and proteinuria.
