@drlibraryben.bsky.social admitting the crimes of their ancestors in Nova Scotia to kick off the closing keynote of #APLA2025. We appreciate the disclosures!

Talking about a lot of the barriers that we've been lamenting in libraries for more than 40 years and that are still part of the field. Things like sessional contracts are an accessibility issue! #APLA2025

"There is no version of [disability] that does not include own-voice narratives." #APLA2025

One of my colleagues was having some slide trouble this morning so I definitely just broke into her office to help her fix it. Done my #APLA2025 good deed on that last day!

#APLA2025 day 2: currently learning about shared print programs. Knitting another unfinished project (in addition to learning, I want to finish this one too during conference). Drinking my lavender cold foam matcha with soy milk there's no oat milk at the campus Starbucks. We are thriving.

I won #APLA2025 trivia AND finished knitting my boxy cropped Tshirt out of linen yarn (I started it at the beginning of May, it’s soaking in my sink and will be blocked shortly). A successful first day of conference!

Thanks Ben! I really loved this keynote, it was a journey, and I genuinely had a great time (even in the darker parts). #APLA2025

Got up early to start #APLA2025!

"I don't know about you, but I think a lot of us went to a very dark place after the American election" - @drlibraryben.bsky.social TRUE. #APLA2025

Really appreciating @drlibraryben.bsky.social's candour, as always. #APLA2025

Absolutely cackling at @drlibraryben.bsky.social's description of library school professor saying they learn theory there, and if they want to learning cataloguing, go to Western. Library school is a trip. #APLA2025

Many thanks! Also, you seem to be the only one holding down the fort for the #APLA2025 hashtag! It's appreciated. We need more APLA librarians on Bluesky XD

Moving into accommodations as a barrier - this is another reason why I have shied away from disability for a long time, and also the notion of means testing has invalidated my experience of the world, which is fundamentally different than someone who doesn't have vision loss. #APLA2025

Honoured to announce that I have been invited to be a keynote speaker at the Atlantic Provinces Library Association's annual conference: Breaking Barriers #APLA2025.

The working title is:

Rainbows at Night: Neurodiverging Literacy and Librarianship in “the Darkest Timeline”

"You can't ignore the labour dimensions of disability." Oooof I feel this, particularly as a person whose invisible disability has very real physical impacts (I can't see things!) that crash up against the structure of the workplace. #APLA2025

Ben is talking about the ways that masking becomes a loop: you learn to mask to cope, medical professionals tell you you're fine because if you weren't you couldn't handle things, but you're barely hanging on and masking is the only way you know how to interact anymore. #APLA2025
June 12, 2025 at 8:07 PM
@drlibraryben.bsky.social telling us now that he's been told autistic people have no sense of humour, but he does. He said "joke's on you, I don't have one," which I know is simply not true! #APLA2025
June 12, 2025 at 7:49 PM
Talking about inspiration porn now - eg. we know who Helen Keller is but don't know that she was a socialist (and yes! The was NOT part of those rosy childhood novels I read about Keller, they never got to her work as a thinker, scholar, and activist). #APLA2025
