Just finished reading final student reflections after my AfAmStudies students finished reading “Wake” by @wakerevolt.bsky.social
This book hits so hard; both the stories of women-led revolts and the story of the persistence of Dr Hall inspired my students.
Y’all should read this book. #APAFAM 🗺️

Revamping a lesson that uses SlaveVoyages.org for APAFAM. The website helps students wrestle with the numbers and the geographies of the Middle Passage b4 we dive into the narratives.
The site recently upgraded from 2.0 > 3.0 (🤩) but the links to the content I want are now broken (😭).

I have 21 years in -- 8 in a junior high, 6 in the district office, this is 7 here...this will be a good time to move and shake things up a bit. I have the APAfAm course coming next year (knock on wood) to push me academically, hoping the physical move will ultimately be positive too. Just...painful

For each test, I like to play a song before we start to set the mood. Just wrapped WW2 & Double V era.
As I was looking for something to play, I stumbled onto Josh White playing "Freedom's Road" (1942, lyrics by Langston Hughes).
I am so using this song! Listen thru to the last verse 🫡

I’m considering rewriting my pitch deck for my AP African America Studies class…

I ended up with 5 AP sections (3 APUSH, 2 APAFAM) this year; so I was looking for a way to reduce my grading load but still have meaningful tasks for the students (who, to be fair, would have prefer’d that I just eliminate tasks 🙃).
But I like how this is working and I think it is better than b4.

My #APAFAM students are exploring the music of the Civil Rights era... we've stepped out of the classroom to a larger space so they can spread out and get comfortable.
It's a kick to hear Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Martha and the Vandellas, and others bounce around the learning space

So much of building an AfAm Studies class is me falling into rabbit holes and discovering the amazing stories, art, speeches, letters that are the history.

One one hand, 😁 for my discovery that @nhannahjones.bsky.social is on BlueSky. OTOH, 🤬 racists.
I used the Colorblindness article she mentions in this 🧵 with my #APAFAM ss earlier this year. It’s an excellent read, as is this 🧵

Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.

Doing some prep for APAFAM and I came across this from Ida B. Wells...
Seems so simple, but yet so complicated, yet very necessary.

I use her framework for resistance with APAFAM - Revolution, Protection, Force, Fight, Joy.
It helps my ss go deeper into the Resistance & Resilience theme and gives them language to differentiate resistance experiences.
It’s a great book!

On tap for today in #APAFAM - Slavery & Legal Codes. Woot 😒
Covering Dred Scott v Sandford -
Inquiry Prompt: Summarize Taney's rationale... or explain why Taney's opinion demonstrates he's a racist son-of-a-b****.
I feel like that question is appropriate historical inquiry for the topic. 🤷♂️

I did not realize you were on the APAFAM ride as well!
How’s it going?
My ss just did a mini-version of “the project”, sort of a test run, and it went pretty well.
“Excited and overwhelmed” is my motto as well 🤣

As I work further on my Afrofuturism lesson, I think it’s essential that I read all of Ta-Nehisi Coates Black Panther comics.
That’s just the kind of due diligence I think my students expect. I’m doing it for the kids.
