I'm a fan of Octopath and so-called old-school (J)RPGs in general, but I was a bit "???" about the hype over 8path2 being so immensely superior to the first one. It's more fleshed-out, but storytelling and characters are more or less the same: very casual and old-school.

Ok gonna po Octopath 0 on PS5. I want to look at the nice sprites... Plus I remember the Switch ver of 8path2 struggling when there were 8 chars on the screen for the final fight. And 0 is gonna be That all the time.

I'd say the story of DQXI is more interesting to follow, even though it feels tropey it grows on you.
8path2 kinda does the same thing but the joy is more in the gameplay and job system. You can just skip the story scenes if you're not feeling them after awhile.
