The poorest January since I started recording the weather. Luckily clear for the Quadrantids meteor shower.

A yellow Quadrantid meteor passing through Ursa Major at 00:15 UT on 4 January 2026. The meteor is just to the right of the handle of the 'Plough' asterism that forms part of Ursa Major. The twin stars Mizar and Alcor can be seen above left of the meteor. The sky is a blueish colour due to light from the full Moon. There some trees in the foreground. Shot taken with a Canon 250D DSLR and 16mm lens at 6s exp, 16mm fl, f/2.8, ISO-400. A multi-coloured swirl of light created by a long exposure of the star Sirius using a handheld DSLR with 300mm lens. The camera was intentionally moved during the exposure, creating the effect. Open cluster M41 in Canis Major from 14 January 2026. Shot taken with a 72ED scope and Canon 250D DSLR on a Star Adventurer mount. Shot made up of 18 stacked images at 10s exp, 420mm fl, f/5.8, ISO-1600. Image of the Orion Nebula taken on 14 January 2026 at 00:27 UT. The last clear night I had was on 13-14 January. I was testing out my new Altair Hypercam 585C camera. I went for (of course) the Orion Nebula. Had to keep the exposures short but I was impressed with the result! Details in the ALT. #Astronomy #Astrophotography #Space
Image of the Orion Nebula taken on 14 January 2026 at 00:27 UT. I used an Altair Hypercam 585C camera through an Evostar 72ED scope on a Star Adventurer mount. The camera and scope combination gives quite a narrow field of view so the Star Adventurer isn't ideal for this type of work. However, that's what I've got so that's what I used. I had to keep the exposures short to avoid tracking issues. I wanted to see how the camera performed initially, rather than going for a long imaging session, so I didn't take a lot of shots. This image is only a total of 1 min 45 sec integration time. I was very impressed with the result! Full settings: 7x 15s exp, 420mm fl, f/5.8. Awaiting some clear skies to test the camera fully.
