##Heliophysics
The last ~24 hours of the Sun in EUV in 171+193+211 Å SDO AIA filters. We see the large transequatorial coronal hole now directly facing Earth. Enhanced solar wind may arrive in 2-3 days. An M1.06 flare peaking at 0756 UT on Dec 20 + non Earth-directed CME occured from AR 4315.

‼️ALERT‼️

The Administration is now targeting #NCAR, claiming it spreads federal climate alarmism.

I reject the premise that climate science is alarmist. But NCAR enables much more science research NCAR than that. Closure would be devastating, including for #heliophysics at @colorado.edu and HAO.

A large, snaking coronal hole is facing Earth. Fast solar wind from its western edge is currently affecting us now with solar wind speeds > 600 km/s. These conditions may spark active high-latitude aurora with bursts of activity reaching upper-mid latitudes at times.

A very large coronal hole is currently dominating the Earth-facing solar disk. You can see it here as this dark, snaking patch in SDO imagery. I have annotated the image. The leading edge of this coronal hole seems to be affecting Earth now, and more disturbances could be on the way.

Day 12 of #ArtAdventCalendar

Oops, I blinked and we’re almost halfway through December. Here’s a design from all the way back in 2019 that I shockingly still love. P is for Parker Solar Probe.

PUNCH observations of comet 3I/ATLAS: where #planetaryscience meets #heliophysics.

I am lucky to work in the same building as most of the PUNCH team, so I get early peaks at the great science. They are doing amazing work with that mission, and some of it will benefit planetary science. Very cool!

Tomorrow, we may see a strong, G3 geomagnetic storm and auroras occuring further equatorward than usual. This is in response to a coronal mass ejection (CME) heading towards Earth. Impact may occur sometime Monday night into Tuesday. Here's what's happening and what to expect 🧵

Just now: NOAA SWPC Is forecasting the M8.1 CME to arrive around 5 UT on Dec 9. This is essentially the same arrival time as the NASA M2M model, so it's great these models are converging. Monday night is "the night" for potential auroras at mid-latitudes. Fingers crossed!

The M1.1 flare from AR 4299 apparently destabilized a filament immediately to the east of the active region. A CME may be associated with this development, but we'll need to see what emerges in coronagraph imagery to confirm... finally the Sun gives us something to talk about!

The sunspot number for November is in, and it was a steep drop close to late 2022-levels. We are on the declining phase of the solar cycle.

A "double-hump" solar cycle does NOT seem likely to me, but the declining phase is a very exciting time for aurora chasers, here's why 🧵

Here is the current Sun and a summary thread of what is going on. We have three major-flare players in the east with a large, trans-equatorial coronal hole currently staring us down. There is a forecast for G1-G2 (slight G3) on Dec 3-4 and mid-latitude aurora possibilities.

In case you are wondering about the NASA M2M prediction for the X1.9 CME, they are modeling it as a miss. Here is the WSA-ENLIL+Cone model showing the shock and bulk heading east of the Earth.

BOOM! X-CLASS FLARE HAPPENING NOW from an un-numbered active region (AR) on the Sun's northeastern limb. This is ex-AR 4274 which gave us the G4 storm earlier in November. Apparently, it still has some juice left for more fireworks.

Good morning. The X1.9 CME has been modeled by a few agencies. NASA M2M registers a miss at Earth, NOAA SWPC predicts a love tap from the shock front around Dec 4, 11 UT, and HUXt is giving a ~37% chance of a hit around Dec 4, 3 UT with high arrival time uncertainty.

Scientists can use helioseismology to probe for large active regions we can't see. In this annotated image courtsey of SolarHam, we can see two chunky active regions approaching the east limb potentially rotating into our view in the coming days. Ex-AR 4274 looks healthy, too.

Small, negative-polarity coronal hole no. 96 is currently facing Earth and could send a small burst of fast wind our way, reaching us by perhaps the weekend. Minor geomagnetic storming is possible, but I am not getting super excited about this one... 🧵

The X4 CME from AR 4274 generated a nice coronal mass ejection (CME), but most of the blast is headed away from our planet. This is because the active region is positioned on the Sun's limb and not facing Earth like it was last week. Still, we may see a clip from this CME.
