The Vatican has confirmed that the Swiss Guard is conducting an internal investigation into one of its members over alleged antisemitic comments toward two Jewish women. Press director Matteo Bruni said that, according to preliminary findings, the report concerns a dispute that arose from a request to take a photo at the guard post. The incident reportedly occurred on October 29 at one of the entrances to St. Peter's Square. The victims are Michal Govrin, an Israeli writer, and Vivian Liska, director of the Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Antwerp. Govrin said she was confronted by a guard who told them it was forbidden to take photos and who, later, as if talking to himself, muttered "Jews" and made a gesture as if to spit. Liska said she asked for clarification; the guard denied, and she replied, "Lies." Govrin corroborated the account with Kathpress. The Swiss Guard spokesman said opening an investigation is routine and that they are checking with those involved to ensure a professional process; if confirmed, the guard's future would be decided by the commander.
