As much as I want to try pulling it off or cleaning it, he was injected with antibiotics that should work for 2 weeks, so I don't want to interfere too much. I did call the vet to ask, but they were closed. For now, I'll just watch it and see if it falls off on its own, like a nasty-looking scab.

They have him and are currently checking him, but it does look fairly bad in terms of the wound. Hopefully it's an easy recovery for him.
