Could do a complaint for the stomping, but then they know it was you. Retaliation can be a bitch.
If you honestly suspect something grim, document anything out of the ordinary and call for a welfare check.

Definitely try for the refund, since VPNs are monthly (or yearly) costs. If you end up having to go that route though, let us know if you need (correct) advice.

That sucks. I think the only solution you could do to salvage the situation is VPN from your computer to Japan. But, you'd need to find a free VPN so you aren't spending more money.
