The slow murder of The Washington Post, one of the most respected investigative bodies in history, by corporate greed and government threat is personally heartbreaking, and a disaster for democracy. The Post’s official motto is “Democracy Dies In Darkness”, and Bezos just turned out the lights. 🗞️

one thing that would be cool, when prominent creators turn out to be terrible people, would be if we didn't have to go through this performative dance of insisting that their work was never good in the first place.

Papa on Mussolini in 1923. I found this short historical article incredibly relevant.
Hemingway on Il Duce - E.T. Brooking
Mussolini is the biggest bluff in Europe. If Mussolini would have me taken out and shot tomorrow morning I would still regard him as a bluff. The shooting would be a bluff.

120 years ago this December, President Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the peace that ended the Russo-Japanese War. He was the first American to ever receive the prize. The award resides in the Roosevelt Room of the White House to this day.

I don’t want this to be prophetic, but what if ICE is merely being used as a rabid hardline prop to make the actual military seem more reasonable to deploy, and to be thrown under the bus at the appropriate time? I need everyone to consider the historic precedent of the “Night of the Long Knives”.

Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his Monticello tomb, and would’ve been the first in line to decry this “deal”.

As we debate the content of Right and Left podcasters and content creators, I couldn’t help but think of Jon Stewart’s 2004 CNN Crossfire appearance and how he pointed out TV talking heads were mere political hackery. Im not absolving Jon though in subsequently promoting the same infotainment.

In light of recent events.
Political violence should be condemned at every turn by everyone. I believe in that principle more every day.
But there is certainly a unsettling sense of us all reaping the whirlwind in this darkest hour.
