A handful of the hundreds of peaceful protesters who turned out in Wells, Maine yesterday. The State Library last received funds from its 2025 Federal award advance through the Institute and Museum and Library Services (IMLS) on March 24, 2025, and has not received any communication from IMLS on if, or when, this funding may be restored. IMLS funding represents 30% of the State Library’s annual budget. The 13 affected employees represent approximately 30% of the State Library’s staff. If the State Library’s Federal funding becomes accessible, the layoffs could be rescinded. “Losing access to this Federal funding harms Maine residents and will have negative consequences in communities across the state,” said Lori Fisher, Maine State Librarian. “Despite these significant cuts, the Maine State Library remains committed to advancing the mission of libraries in Maine and to serving every library patron to the best of our ability.” In Federal fiscal year 2024, the State Library was awarded $1,526,754 from the IMLS Library Services & Technology Act, Grants-to-States program to library services and programs across the state. In Maine, there are more than 600 school libraries, 257 public libraries, 33 academic libraries at universities and colleges, and select special libraries in government buildings, correctional institutions, and health care and nonprofit settings. The Maine State Library has received funding through IMLS since its inception; annual amounts are determined by a population formula. The State Library’s closure will begin Thursday 4/10/25. During this reorganization period, the State Library location at 242 State Street in Augusta will not be open to the public. The State Library is continuing to evaluate the range of impacts on library services from this funding cut and will provide further updates as information becomes available. Federally funded staff provide key services for MSL’s patrons and the state’s libraries. Services they perform include serving the public who come through the doors or access our collection online; organizing our collection of over 7 linear miles books and other items; ensuring the public has access to all of the library holdings in the state—over 10 million items; providing 1:1 consultations and professional development services for library staff across the state; ensuring those who are homebound or live in remote communities have access to library services; and Maine residents who are blind, visually impaired or have a print disability are provided with reading materials. The services these professionals provide everyday are core to the State Library’s mission to help people, make Maine libraries stronger and transform information into knowledge. Library Services and Technology Act funding in Maine IMLS funding supports State Library services authorized under the Library Services and Technology Act. Since 1996, LSTA has played an essential role in ensuring Maine’s residents and their libraries have the services, resources, and support necessary to thrive.

Black and white logo art for Parsons Memorial Library in Alfred, Maine. It's a stylized version of our front entrance. The original granite library was built in 1903. The front doors are quarter sawn white oak with distinctive windows and there are granite columns on either side. It is a beautiful place and I love it profoundly. Flyer I made for a FREE concert we're throwing on February 15th. It's bright and colorful with a lots of hearts and a moonshine jug! The text reads: Parsons Memorial Library has a Valentine for our community! Join us for a FREE concert by Maine's Own Half Moon Jug Band, Saturday, Feb. 15 at Alfred Parish Church. Come for a Community Meal before the concert! • Lasagna • Salad • Italian Bread • Red Velvet Cake • $10 adult • $7 child (10 & under) • $30 family Proceeds will support The Alfred Parish Church Steeple Restoration Fund. Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd "The Rabbit of Seville." Bugs' does an ear slapping scalp massage that will be forever etched on my brain. The soundtrack is the opera “The Barber of Seville,” by Gioachino Rossini. I cannot hear this music without seeing Bugs' fingers and toes keeping time with the beat.

Some years I make gingerbread. It depends on my mood. This year I made pumpkin custards (pumpkin pie filling baked in ramekins) and chocolate cream pie. In this photo the top of the cake visible on the right is gingerbread sprinkled with powdered sugar.

My two dogs running towards me on a snow covered road that cuts through the forest. The tall evergreen trees are loaded with snow, and the snow banks on either side are 4' high. I was digging out the mail box and stopped to snap a picture of my snow loving girls.

My Lucille is similarly short-wired, abused and surrendered twice before we got her. Easily triggered. We like to say, "She WANTS to be a good girl, but sometimes her brain won't let her."

She's a good girl tho, and she landed in the right place.

I like to bake for my friends. I say "I love you" with special occasion treats.
A square red plate filled with decorated Christmas cookies. Their sugar cookies cut into stars, bells and trees. Colorful sugar and sprinkles are used for decoration. A dozen lemon cupcakes with raspberry cream frosting and a fresh raspberry on top of each one. Top view of four carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. I made little carrots from orange Starburst candies and used a sprig of parsley for their tops. Freshly made English muffins. I gave these with butter from a local dairy and grape jam I made from wild grapes in my yard.

My rescue dog, a black lab mix named Friday. She's laying on my decaying porch next to a pink, white and orange floral arrangement. She's a good girl, even if her bum emits toxic fumes occasionally.

Libraries encourage it! Every library card, every patron visit, every reference request, every time you use a computer or our high speed internet -- it boosts our numbers, which determines our funding. Use them or lose them -- libraries need you!!
