The Indian Pitta is a plump, short-tailed bird about the size of a thrush. Its underside is a warm, toasted-buff color, ending in a startlingly bright red patch under the tail. Its back is a vibrant leaf-green with shimmering turquoise-blue patches on the wings. A bold black stripe runs through its eyes like a mask, contrasted by a white throat and striped crown. Often found hopping on the forest floor, it moves with a sturdy, upright posture and emits a clear, whistling two-note call.
