Turbulent week in politics but for the 1st time the 3 big offices of state below PM - Home Sec, Foreign Sec and Chancellor are *all occupied by women*. And two by people of colour.

I cannot imagine how terrifying it must be for minority Americans, or those living in US with legitimate working or student visas. Citizenship and settlement must feel so insecure. Also what Trump’s administration is doing to its citizens should be a warning to us all about second-tier citizenship

Not only do we have an epidemic of violence and misogyny against women and girls - but it’s getting worse. In 2022-23, reports of violence against women and girls accounted for 20% of all police-recorded crime in the UK. Govt policies have to do much more to combat sexism and misogyny in society.

It is 5 years since the start of covid-19 pandemic. While as a country we came together, our lives were also torn apart. We lost so many of our loved ones - and we missed out with precious time with them. Here’s to a Day of Reflection. Miss my mum like a hole in my soul.

Sometimes it feels like the fight for gender equality is getting harder and harder, but then you have to remember that progress and social change can happen! This 👇was our UK Chancellor with his treasury officials before the Budget in 2023. But look where we are now with Rachel Reeves as Chancellor!

Time for us to show our vocal support for Canada! It’s an extraordinary country (my children are half-Canadian), with the loveliest people and a rich history! We cannot let Trump bully Canada and other countries in this way!

Looking for a pork-free (but doesn't have to be meat free) stuffing recipe to go with the roast turkey this Christmas. Have a few mouths to feed! All ideas welcome!

I am a huge fan of @jburnmurdoch.bsky.social's analysis and work. But here's the thing: a lot of things could be happening at the same time: we know austerity, poverty (+ covid) has had detrimental impact on health. Life expectancy has decreased for poorest 10% women. Health inequalities widening..

I would never have seen this exchange 👇 between @gabrielmilland.bsky.social @jonnelledge.bsky.social @bpwilliams72.bsky.social and others on the state of English local government on Twitter. One of the many reasons why I'm happy to be on @bsky.app. Even someone asking if "it’ll all end in tiers?" 😂

The current structure of inheritance tax, with its many allowances and reliefs, creates *too many* opportunities for tax avoidance. That's clearly unfair. But also need to be clear what we do with the revenue raised from inheritance tax. Public services ££s esp benefit women and lower income groups

It’s my last day at Women’s Budget Group today. I have admired this brilliant feminist economics think tank for so long; it’s been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with my WBG colleagues. Follow WBG! Read their reports! Watch out for their rigorous Budget analysis on 30 Oct!
