Delicious dinner last night at Mista Oh near Madison Park. Jjapchae had that wonderful savory, salty soy taste with a hint of sweetness, and the kimchi pancakes had a perfect, crispy crust with soft, spicy insides, but the highlight was the bulgogi bibimbap.

Caitlin said this reminded her of Costco’s pizza, which she meant as a compliment, though at best it’s a mild one. I kind of enjoyed the chewy crust and but prefer more sauce on my pies, and the taste of the cheese wasn’t strong enough to make up for that.

One of the hardest spots to book, but an incredibly flavorful Neapolitan style pie with rich, tomatoey sauce and an incredibly light crust

Was asked to fill out an audience survey after Red One and for the question “To what age group would you recommend this movie?” one of the answers was “Children 18+” which is better burn than I could have come up with

He can be funny but he is not a comedian. Like his last “who asked for this?” fiasco Ghosted, Red One would have been better served by casting an actual funny person in the funny guy role. Was Jason Sudeikis busy or does Capt just do better with your demo than Ted Lasso?

Side note: Chris Evans is genetically incapable of playing losers. An asshole? Sure. Wet blanket? Fine. But something about his face radiates self-assuredness. Every time he puts on a vaguely regional accent in order to seem more like a regular guy it just makes him seem more like an alien.

Why is this deeply saccharine film about the magic of XMas rated PG-13? Whose decision was it to make a bloated $200M The Rock movie aimed at all ages instead of a modest $30M film w John Cena made for kids? There’s far too little whimsy for a movie about a magic man who delivers gifts via chimney.

RED ONE: The Santa Clause by way of Russo Bros. There’s sort of fun, “what if Santa was like the head of state” world building, designed to appeal to little boys and their emotionally unavailable dads, mostly buried beneath ugly, hyperrealistic CG in superfluous blockbuster action sequences.

MONKEY MAN goes ape shit. Dev Patel asserts him as an A-level action star in his hard-hitting, bone-breaking, badass directorial debut. Wild, intense brawls that stretch across scenes, this one feels like a shot of pure adrenaline. #SXSW

THE MARVELS: Cute, silly space adventure w/ charming performances, esp Iman Vellani, whose contagiously upbeat energy pops off the screen. Story here is slapdash, plot points land w/ an anticlimactic suddenness, but it’s fun, breezy & doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Bottoms good. Funniest movie of the year.

Decided to go long on why it feels like such a throwback, what happened to R-rated theatrical comedies, and how Bottoms might be the most important movie of 2023.

MAESTRO is a magnificently performed & photographed biopic that’s equally focused on Bernstein’s inner life as it is on his outer successes. Cooper & Mulligan are electric especially as they jump on each other’s sentences like classic film stars. Lacks depth but never lacks verve.
