One funny thing was that I only started sequencing the Physalia genome because I kept failing at getting good high molecular weight DNA from ctenophores. But easier lab work was a trade off for harder computational work. A 3 Gbp genome that was mostly repeats. I’m glad Sam pushed this over the line

The first assembly took 398,000 CPU hours and months of babysitting. After I left the lab, Sam was finally able to get good scaffolds by generating a new Hi-C dataset. Then he coordinated the collection of 100s of new genomic samples from around the globe.
