Climate change is putting the future of winter sports at risk. Natural snow is disappearing, resorts are relying artificial snow, and researchers warn many historic venues may no longer be viable. Maybe it's time to rethink how and where we compete in winter sports.

I think this still continues to influence the public's attitude toward hosting major events! I think Montreal’s experience made many Canadians more skeptical about bidding for future SEMs. Maybe this pushed the government to rethink how venues are planned so we don’t repeat the same mistakes.

This article describes how climate change is affecting athletes training. Athletes have previously trained on Whistler's glacier, but by summer 2024 it was declared unsafe due to rapid melting and unstable conditions. How will winter athletes adapt as their training environments continue to shrink?

Germany’s new coalition is boosting sport with a dedicated State Minister, major funding, stronger support for women’s programs, and recognition of e-sports. Do you think these changes will significantly transform Germany’s sports landscape?
Germany's new government makes sport a top priority – DW – 04/11/2025
For the first time, a minister of state is to be specifically responsible for sport in Germany's new government. What difference will this really make?

That's a great point! Sports don’t operate in a vacuum. Government influence can shape what audiences see and how narratives are framed, as North Korea’s selective World Cup broadcasting shows. It reminds us that sports can become tools for control when information is tightly managed.

I agree! The deal highlights the power media companies have. By paying billions for exclusive rights, Rogers changed how fans watched hockey and pushed CBC out of controlling Hockey Night in Canada. It also shows how one major company can shape what fans see and who gets to tell the story.

This is a great example! This case shows how actions on the field can resemble behaviour similar to criminal assault. Thatcher's actions resulted in serious medical consequences for Pedro Mendes, which shows why leagues sometimes need to treat these cases with more than routine discipline.

This is a great example of how sports can connect to real world violence. Escobar’s death showed how pride and anger can turn deadly when fans take it too far. It also showed the pressure athletes face representing their countries. This reminds us competition should never outweigh humanity.

Yesterday in PSG’s UCL game vs Bayern, Hakimi was injured after a two-legged tackle from Luis Díaz. This is an example of borderline violence because it broke the rules, showed excessive force, and led to Díaz being penalized with a red card for his reckless play.

I agree too. Allowing PEDs puts athletes health at serious risk and destroys the integrity of sports. Competition should highlight training and talent, not chemical enhancement or unsafe practices. It also sets a bad example for young athletes who may feel pressure to use drugs.

Agreed! Cheating is a clear example of negative deviance since they broke the rules and still won the World Series. It also shows how winning through dishonest means can overshadow real talent and hard work. Do you think teams that cheat like this should lose their titles or championships afterward?

Canada Soccer coach Bev Priestman was fired after staff used drones to spy on opponents before the 2024 Olympics. This incident represents negative deviance, as it violated fair play and ethical norms in sport. Instead of benefiting the sport, it damaged trust and integrity in competition.

I agree! I think Simone Biles showed courage by prioritizing her mental health during the Olympics. Her choice helped break the stigma around mental health in sports and inspired other athletes to speak up and take care of themselves too.

I define sport as a physical activity that requires skill, practice, and competition under a set of rules. To me, what separates sport from regular exercise is the structure and challenge. It’s not just moving your body, but testing your ability against others or against measurable standards.
