This is a basic facet of media studies. How do you reconcile the reader's relationship with the work with the author's indelible fingerprints upon the work, and what else those fingers have done? There isn't, has never been, an easy answer. Ease simply does not factor into the equation.

We have to keep doing this. We have to do this with books and films and games and any meaningful media. Recognize that it's skillfully crafted, recognize the meaning it has to you, and do the terrible math of weighing it against who created it and what they have done.
