It’s ultimately a sad song. That last line, “if only in my dreams” tells us that the protagonist won’t really be home, maybe they can’t get there, or it doesn’t exist, or they’re not welcome anymore. So the rest of the song is just wishful thinking.

I remember, when I was a child, riding in cars that reeked of cigarette smoke so much that I was nauseous the whole time. My father also smoked in the car, but apparently our car’s interior didn’t react with the smoke in the same way because it didn’t smell as bad.
