I worked at Crown Books waaaay back in the day. We did this a lot. We were absolutely not allowed to keep the books (officially, but I can't speak for all my co-workers). But we did, once, when the store closed. I kept, I think, 3 paperback books.

I will second this. Learned about them when the author plugged them on Scalzi's Whatever blog. Read the first one & couldn't stop. Do yourself a favor and pick them up. Absolutely wonderful.
