So why does a dwindling minority of the electorate stick w Trump despite his obvious growing detachment from reality? He validates their grievances--they feel seen. It's not rational. Governance is slow, boring, deliberate, requiring compromise. Neither he nor they are interested. It's a cult.

Nazi type rhetoric adopted by the US Dept of Labor: "One homeland, one people, one heritage" is an adaptation of "Ein Volk Ein Reich Ein Führer" (one people one realm one leader). THE US HAS NEVER BEEN ONE HERITAGE. Christian Nationalists, dream on. We are one based on respect for the rule of law.
January 20, 2026 at 12:28 AM
If you don't see how the US is slipping into Nazi style fascism you are clueless about history: Kristi Noem in Minneapolis borrowed the Nazi phrase "One of ours, all of yours" used by Nazis to justify wiping out whole villages in retaliation for the killing of a Nazi officer. ICE in MN to terrorize.

@hcrichardson.bsky.social For you Politics Chat tomorrow please address Trump's underlying rationale for wanting to own Greenland: Is it a vanity project, the desire to leave a legacy of expanding the U.S., like Jefferson (the Louisiana Purchase) or Seward (Alaska)? Or something else? Thanks.
January 19, 2026 at 7:59 PM
That Trump believes he must acquire Greenland to enhance Russia/China deterrence defies logic: He is not compelled to overrun Bahrain where the US has a key military base nor Japan where our most important Asian fleet is stationed. Greenlanders would be happy to have enhanced security w sovereignty.
January 19, 2026 at 7:49 PM
Historians agree that Trump's desire to acquire Greenland is a vanity project: He wants to be remembered for having expanded the U.S., like Jefferson (the Louisiana Purchase) or Seward (Alaska). But it comes at the unthinkable price of wrecking NATO & encouraging Putin.

An expert in US intelligence warns that 11th Airborne Brigade is readying battalions ostensibly for "Minnesota" but likely is actually intended for Greenland.
January 19, 2026 at 1:46 PM
In a jaw dropping letter from Trump to Norway's prime minister, he admits that he wants to seize Greenland because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Like King George III of England, he is descending into madness. Time to invoke the 25th Amendment.
January 19, 2026 at 12:08 PM
In a refreshingly bipartisan move Congress has the votes to pass the NATO Unity Protection Act. It bars any funding that would be used to seize Greenland. This is to prevent Trump's threats of seizure from shattering US relations with Denmark, and more broadly, the NATO alliance.

Historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat explains Trump's current international adventurism: When popularity of autocrats decline they engage in military actions in an effort to redeem themselves. Political scientists call this gambling for resurrection. They wind up on the wrong side of history.

MAGA is about unfettered market freedom from regulation. The EPA doesn't care whether you or your grandchildren can breathe <.cough cough>.

None of the rationales Trump has offered for deposing Maduro make sense. What does is that he's out to control the Western Hemisphere. He's serious about Greenland. The National Security Strategy's "spheres of influence": Xi for Asia , Putin for Europe, Trump for the Americas.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson explains what the US strike on Venezuela means for the world: It upends the rules based international order which, since the end of World War II, has kept us out of a third world war. Most notably it made possible NATO's mutual defense pact and cooperation via the UN

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, known for her study of autocracy titled Strongmen, describes how the phenomenon of oligarch Elon Musk serving INSIDE government (heading up DOGE) rather than outside it represents a situation not ever encountered previously by autocrats before Trump.

George Takei said it best: "My legacy is to outlive Trumpism." This is how I'm doing it.

Jasmine Crockett has doubts about Trump running Venezuela. "Asking for Americans: Are you able to run the government you were elected to run?" She has a point. The master of distraction has taken on regime change, we are not able to afford groceries or healthcare. DO YOUR JOB.
January 4, 2026 at 8:12 AM
@hcrichardson.bsky.social Once I heard about the NSS with its "spheres of influence" concept, a U.S. hegemony in the Western Hemisphere, I figured regime change in Venezuela was imminent. By enlarging his concept of what constitutes America, Trump is upending the rules based international order.
January 4, 2026 at 1:32 AM
Regime change in Venezuela. Why are some of us not surprised? And what does this mean for America First? The tip-off was the recently published National Security Strategy. "Spheres of influence," i.e., American hegemony in the Western Hemisphere. America enlarged to include it.

Wouldbe authoritarian Donald Trump thinks he should not have to answer questions about his health. Yet he is repeatedly asked to submit to a cognitive test. "Our country cannot be run by stupid or incompetent people." Or by lawless people willfully ignorant of the Constitution.

@jbf1755.bsky.social In your chat with Heather today you brought up the vulnerability we live with as Jews, that history has shown we can never anticipate when we will be driven out. Nazism provides a chilling example. I suspect that here it would likewise only take economic instability.

The worst aspect of the scourge that is Donald Trump's presidency: What children are learning from his example. Be afraid of anyone not white. Facts & truth don't matter. Following the law doesn't matter. Being nice is for losers. Never take responsibility--blame others.
