Poem by Zoe Faye Jensen titled 'A Shopping Trip' and published on Indefinitely Unmedicated: "At the grocery store Waiting in line All the noises drown out Everything in sight I pick it all up Everything In case you don't get it Let me explain The register beeping One more drop... The old man sneezing One more drop. The children screaming One more drop! A cart's wheel squeaking ONE MORE DROP! Music playing on the speaker A couple arguing The hum of a fridge A lady tapping her foot A siren in the distance Someone yelling on the phone for some reason Children crying out AGAIN Some weird buzzing sound! Can I hear the fucking electricity somehow? Could you shut those kids up already!? Lady, if you get one step closer, I swear CAN YOU ALL JUST SHUT THE FUCK UUUUUU-" The poem is interrupted by a wall of various onomatopoeias blending together to symbolize noise, and then continues: "-UUUUUUP!? At least I have groceries."

They will call it soft. They will call it indulgent. They will say now is not the time as if time has ever been gentle enough to wait. Writers— you are not decorating the wreckage. You are naming it so it cannot pretend to be natural. Poets— your metaphors are not escapes; they are contraband. You smuggle truth past numbness in the lining of a line break. Artists— you are not making things “beautiful.” You are making things visible when power prefers a blur. In crisis, language fractures. When systems fail, art becomes the nervous system a way to feel when feeling is dangerous, a way to remember when forgetting is convenient. Make the poem that trembles. Paint the image that refuses closure. Write the sentence that leaves fingerprints on the reader’s throat. Because in the long emergency, art is not commentary it is infrastructure. Keep making. Not because it will save us but because without it, we won’t even know what we are trying to save.
