This issue, the dark centre of Byrne’s Supergirl saga is my favourite from the era, told in double page spreads. Ordway packs so much detail and mood into these pages, terrific world building. Really sharp and sympathetic inks from Dennis Janke too.

There’s no real sense that for all his sense of mutant kinship Brian has any feelings for Meggan, and having been rejected by her own parents and community Meggan’s feelings towards him are immature infatuation. But then she becomes a beautiful woman and he’s straight in there. Creepy af.

Kurt appears as a love rival early in Meggan and Brian’s relationship and she is as you point out still adjusting to no longer being the ugly duckling. In many ways Kurt is the first adult male suitor she has met, as her relationship with Brian does cross the line from child/guardian to lovers.

Fascinating. Initially I thought ‘fake mirror shot with double’ because they couldn’t get a shot from that angle without revealing set and/or cameras in the background. But they managed it in this scene.

I always liked this one, particularly the anticipation of it.

This came out a year earlier. Not calling it a rip off but wonder if Simonson was influenced by it?

…and the cast is handy for full force kicks? How did he get the cast put in over his costume?

I found this Red Star Robinson art online that is obviously Ron Smith and the characters here look quite a bit different from the cover you’ve shared, which is striking but lacks his panache with facial expressions. But it doesn’t look like the work of main RSR artist Terry Patrick either.

He would of course intervene in foreign state affairs much later, on the basis that he ‘believed’ Qurac were responsible for an attack on US soil.

Has a really whacky start where Supes averts catastrophe as per usual. I get the sense risk assessment in the DC Universe are a bit more casual. “Might burn the entire atmosphere?” “No problem, build it close enough to Metropolis and you’re good to go”

Fonda’s own journey from 70s collective protest queen to 80s keep fit individualism icon follows a similar path.

Look at the set up for goal line technology. They do similar with Hawkeye in tennis. There’s no sensible way to expand that to cover the width of either side of each pitch in every ground in the SPL.

That classic Action Comics revealed they were alternate universe Supermen, not an idea that ever caught on. The same issue starts with Supes coming to the rescue when a solar power experiment threatens to ignite the Earth’s atmosphere. Who signs off on these things?
