Contemporary China is imperialist and fascistic in its own way, but I agree, the rising sun motif is inappropriate.

China is still a capitalist society, regardless of what social welfare or social security programs exist there. In some ways, they may even be more capitalist than the US, given low average wages, limited regulations, and anti-union measures.

Mmmm!

I already have Telegram!

I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing, and it only seems to be affecting US users. If we end up abandoning TikTok, we could lose contact with the world.

Exactly! I'm just saying that there's a chance that this aspect of law could be outside his control.

President Tentacles…

And let's not forget Booker T. Washington!

I hope they're able to stay largely independent and fully operational worldwide by the end of the year.

It could exist in the first place due to an existing belief among the populace that their society is special, or leadership inculcating such a belief, either to maintain their own power over the society, or by accident. It doesn't have to be against anyone in particular.

They're TikTok. And they're pandering to Trump and the US gov't.
January 20, 2025 at 9:53 PM
That's disturbing, and not in the way you think I meant it.
January 20, 2025 at 8:48 PM
They're just pandering in the hopes that Apple and Google will put their app back up on the app stores. I don't think it's about to turn into an X-like cesspit.

I agree that we should ultimately own our content and the platforms that make it possible, but we should also maintain people's ability to speak and connect on existing platforms, imperfect as they may be.

I do appreciate your passion for Bluesky. I only recently joined and I love it. But I still don't wish to allow our government to erect a digital Berlin Wall.

I don't think Meta will be allowed control of TikTok's US operations due to antitrust laws, provided they are upheld.
January 20, 2025 at 7:36 PM
This is what reality feels like now.
January 20, 2025 at 7:26 PM
It's still working the same in the rest of the world.
January 20, 2025 at 7:24 PM
But this situation only applies to the US, and we don't know what's going to happen in the coming days. If we completely give up on TikTok now, we're allowing the US gov't to separate us from the rest of the world internet-wise.

You think it'll suffer the same fate as Twitter?
