i've also tried cleaning it with a cloth lightly damped with isopropyl alcohol which worked well in my opinion, though logitech recommends against it — "Don’t use [...], strong solvents, or abrasives."

good choice. pro tip: clean it often and well, especially the rubber grip, as it tends to gray/yellow out over time.
