As an afterthought, photographs of the final resting place of one of the most famous and admired generals of the United States: George Washington, who seems to remain—to this day—"first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen."

The Tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon was not completed until 1831, nearly one hundred years after his birth, and more than thirty years after his death. The Washingtons had been interred in the old family crypt, and Washington's will requested the building of a new, larger tomb.

George Washington died on the night of 14 December 1799; his wife Martha died on 22 May 1802. This picture shows George's sarcophagus on the right, and Martha's to the left. The inner vault houses other members of the family.

Above the tomb is the following inscription: "Within this Enclosure Rest the remains of Gen[era]l George Washington." A Lieutenant General when he died, Washington was posthumously raised to General of the Armies of the United States, during the Bicentennial of 1976.

The World War II Memorial, dedicated to those who fought in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of the Second World War. The pillars represent the armed forces and civilians of the states and territories of the period. The Wall of Stars bears 4,048 stars—each one representing 100 killed or missing soldiers from the conflict—and bears the following inscription: "Here we mark the price of freedom."

The Vietnam Women's Memorial, dedicated in 1993, commemorates the women who served as military nurses and in various roles during the Vietnam War. While it was not included as part of the original Veterans Memorial, the sculpture was demanded and approved after years of meetings and lobbying. It shows three nurses tending a wounded soldier, and the nearby landscape includes eight trees commemorating eight servicewomen who died in the war.

To the north of the cemetery at Arlington, the United States Marine Corps War Memorial was dedicated in 1954 to all Marines who had given their lives in defense of the U.S. since 1775. The statues themselves were inspired by—and for the most part, modelled after—an iconic photograph of six U.S. Marines, seen raising an American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

In Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded around-the-clock by a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. The marble sarcophagus contains an unidentified soldier who served in the First World War (1914-1918). The three slabs before it—which were added later—house the remains of unidentified soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; the latter's remains have since been identified, and he has been reburied in his hometown.
