Prompt: Celebration
Dimitri had to be dreaming. He touched his lips, wide eyes fixed on the woman before him. The Ashen Demon—no, Byleth—stared back, impassive. As if she hadn’t just… Without a word of explanation, she turned to leave. “Wait!” Dimitri’s face was burning, hot enough that he could no longer feel the winter’s chill. “I—you…why did you…?” Byleth blinked slowly. “Sylvain said it was a kingdom tradition. To kiss people on their birthday.” Of course. Of course that man was to blame. Byleth studied his expression, her mouth curving into an adorable pout. “You look upset. Did I do it wrong?” “No!” Dimitri shouted. Loud. Too loud. Still, he couldn’t let such a misunderstanding persist. “It was…very nice. Enjoyable, even. I mean—that is. Not that I have anything to compare it to! But you were very….well…” As Byleth listened to his rambling, he could have sworn her cool eyes softened. The sight was enough to still his frantic words. “I don’t know when I was born,” Byleth stated. Her voice sounded indifferent, but there was something about her eyes… “Then I suppose I must kiss you everyday, just in case,” Dimitri’s foolish mouth said before his thoughts could catch up. What was he doing? It wasn’t even a real tradition! He snapped his jaw shut in a panic, but it was too late. Byleth would surely scold him for his presumption, or slap him, or walk away with disgust in her heart, or— “Yes,” Byleth said with a nod. She closed the distance between them in an instant, tilting her head back expectantly. “You can start today.” Well. Who was he to deny her command? As their lips pressed together a second time, Dimitri realized he couldn’t remember the last time his birthday had tasted so sweet.
