The reason people do this is a lot of the time they care about reinforcing there worldview rather then any sort of truth or what's right. If someone already doesn't like you they will dig up whatever reinforces their view because they are trying convince themselves, not really anyone else.

I think the the reality is the Pokemon franchise machine doesn't really allow much room for delays, and Game Freak trying to expand to open world game lost a lot character and polish. I do recommend sticking it out though because by far the best parts of the game are packed into the end.
