It turns out that Americans don’t like seeing immigrants abused and insulted, nor do they like the authoritarian immigration crackdowns in their communities. According to Gallup, 55 percent of Americans thought immigration should be decreased in 2024—a proportion that has fallen to 30 percent. Meanwhile, the proportion of Americans who say immigration is a good thing for the country has surged to a record high of 79 percent. Gallup also found that Trump’s overall approval rating on immigration is 37 percent—just slightly above his dismal rating for the economy. “We’re going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country.” This is what the president of the United States said about Somali Americans last week while the vice president slammed his fist on the table in rapturous approval. The audience for grotesque displays of bigotry like this is shrinking. Trump is discovering that performative cruelty has a shelf life in the United States—it isn’t just repulsive, it’s curdling. But because he has surrounded himself with sycophants who praise him North Korea–style for saving hundreds of millions of lives and rescuing the country from certain death, he has no feedback mechanisms to warn him that he’s losing support at a rapid pace. This is a tremendous political opportunity.

Instead of falling prices, inflation has remained stubborn while Trump dismisses concerns about affordability as a “hoax” and suggests buying fewer pencils and dolls. Trump can throw all the fits he wants about his economic numbers. He can fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and rage at Americans for failing to thank him for his poor economic stewardship. But in the end, the economy is what it is, and Trump can’t hide from it.

Trump denied having written the birthday note, claiming in court that the paper made it up. The subpoena proved it was real. The new images dropped a day before a legal deadline for the Justice Department to make public almost everything it has on the late financier, who died while awaiting trial for sex trafficking crimes in 2019. Congress passed a law last month requiring the material to be placed in a public, searchable database within 30 days. The Trump administration previously refused to release the documents. “As we approach the deadline for the Epstein Files Transparency Act, these new images raise more questions about what exactly the Department of Justice has in its possession,” Garcia said. “We must end this White House cover-up, and the DOJ must release the Epstein files now.”

Giuffre stated that in 2002, when she was about 18 years old, Jeffrey Epstein flew her out to Little St. James (known later as “Epstein’s Island”), where hundreds of underaged girls would be trafficked in and out from all over the world for Epstein and his friends. On this occasion, however, he brought in a “well-known Prime Minister,” who “raped [Virginia] more savagely than anyone had before.” The man choked her until she passed out, then let go until she came to, over and over again. “He wanted violence,” she remembered, and laughed at her when she pleaded with him to stop, taking “pleasure in seeing [her] in fear for [her] life.” She says she came away bleeding from her mouth and private area, front and back, and for days struggled to breathe and swallow. Everywhere you look, marginalized people are being eliminated from public spaces, as are the programs that promote and accommodate their existence. The font thing at the State Department is just another decorative flourish of exclusion. It's almost astonishingly petty, the font thing; it's breathtaking in its open meanness, just like everything else Republicans do, but it's all in service of their cult of abuse, which demands that only their story be told, and that it only be understood the way they demand it be understood.
