I gave it a simple try and found that both of these single pieces works quite well.
There're several advantages in design: compact and sturdy; knobs are relatively stable, and not easy to touch the knobs when stepping on the switch.

I quite enjoy collecting all kinds of Overdrive/Distortion/Fuzz pedals, each one has a very distinct personality.
