Maxine Berg shows how the “nimble fingers” stereotype first arose in the early Industrial Revolution as a way for managers to de-skill the labor of women workers. It was also used to exoticize labor of Navajo semiconductor manufacturers at Shiprock in the 60s. The term has a long sordid history.

In today’s episode of “Maps are political objects,” someone has labeled El Salvador’s CECOT prison as a “D3ATH CAMP” on Google Maps

I'm very excited to join @dawnnafus.bsky.social, @tamigraph.bsky.social, Ana Carolina de Assis Nunes, and Tony Salvador in Portland for my very first @appliedanthro.bsky.social conference! I will be talking about data center development in rural North Country, New York.

FYI: It IS being studied, but it has little to do with tech, and mostly to do with labor, precarity, and austerity.

However, these ideological imaginaries are largely incompatible with both the social and geographic topographies in Greenland. Furthermore, the impetus to build a “post-state” follows a centuries-long history of imagining Greenland as a utopian blank slate - Ultima Thule. (1570 map, Alba circled)

Does Polymarket have odds on Zuck’s marriage status yet?

These ai-fueled imaginaries for a future Greenlandic frontier utopia have exactly ZERO basis in any material reality. They are functionally devoid of the region’s history and geography, as well as any of the actual people who currently live there. It’s like a lazy, drop-shipped manifest destiny.

Students might have thought they were signing up for a breezy intro to video production course focused on environmental mediamaking, but little do these freshmen know I'm gonna hit them in the 2nd and 3rd weeks with @hannahknox.bsky.social and @matthewarcher.bsky.social. Very excited

Take, for example, this AI-generated mormon/gothic monstrosity plopped down onto what looks like a South Greenland-ish landscape. A lot going on here, but none of it makes a lick of material sense.

More than just a resource and national security play or a manifest destiny thing (it IS both of those too), it’s becoming increasingly clear that the whole “buying Greenland” thing is deeply entangled with a host of pseudo-religious, TESCREAL, white supremacist ideologies.

We had presentations in my Environmental Media class today and these projects are so good! Infrastructural teardowns of Spotify and Netflix, stories of how fiber harvested by hand in the Philippines gets woven into K-Cup filters, and a an infrastructural map of personal connection. Great work all!

Watching Dickinson in our period-appropriate house with a roaring fire in the wood stove. (Larry David voice) Pretty pretty pretty good.
