My boss: "You seem distracted. What's on your mind?"
On my mind:

COULEURS EMBRASSÉES
ROUGE FEU VIE ÔTÉE
TABLEAU QUE JE NE PEUX VOIR
FERMER LES YEUX RESTER QUE NOIR

EN NOIR SES YEUX TRISTES
À TRAVERS L'OR SON RIRE PERSISTE
DANS CHAQUE COLEUR UNE PART DE LUI
L'AIMER TOUJOURS MÊME S'IL N'EST PLUS ICI

14) UPON A DARK OF EVIL OVERLORDS

by Steven Erikson

🪦🤣🩸💩⚔️

I regret to inform you all that the best Bauchelain and Korbal Broach short story is the one that you can only read by looking at the PICTURES OF HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT PAGES THAT STEVEN ERIKSON POSTED ON HIS FACEBOOK PAGE DURING LOCKDOWN.

12) A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAMURAI

by Jonathan Clements

(Nonfiction)

A fascinating and very broad overview of Japan's military class that effectively ruled the country for about 700 years. This book definitely does not romanticize the samurai or shy away from any of their darker tendencies.

11) COLD DAYS

by Jim Butcher

🥶🧚🏼‍♂️🎅🏼🤯😭

I forgot how much fun the Dresden Files books are.

(I also forgot how male gaze-y they can be but honestly they're so phenomenally fun I don't really care)

This one is a nonstop banger and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

10) PET SEMATARY

by Stephen King

🪦😨😾😬🙅🏼‍♂️

This is my third crack at King and I continue to struggle with how he writes his endings. That said, this book was unsettling and thoroughly horrifying -- just not in the ways I really expected a horror novel to be.

9) TOKYO UENO STATION

by Yu Miri

🇯🇵☹️😢🏞️👻

Colossal bummer of a book about a very sad man who lived a very sad life and became a very sad ghost. Very well written and very Japanese.

8) FORGE OF DARKNESS

by Steven Erikson

⚫⚔️😢🩸🤔

The first of the ancient Malazan history prequel series set in Kharkanas, and the 20th Malazan book I've read, this is a LONG, DENSE, PHILOSOPHICAL JOURNEY through a fracturing empire and is full of elves and gods misbehaving. I loved it.

7) FOURTH WING

by Rebecca Yarros

🐲⚔️😀🫢⚡

All Plot All The Time, which was very welcome after several ponderous books in a row. A really entertaining and fun read, and nice to see the ehlers-danlos rep in fantasy lit.

6) FAITHFUL PLACE

by Tana French

🇮🇪🤔🫢🩸😢

This is the third of French's "Dublin Murder Squad" series, and my favorite of her books I've read so far. She's very good at writing murder mystery novels that gradually morph into heavily character driven litfic.

5) IN THE MISO SOUP

by Ryū Murakami

😨😱🫨🤢🩸

Extremely graphic and dark psychological horror novel. I read this in one day.

THE IDIOT

by Elif Batuman

🤔🎓📖😴🇭🇺

Pulitzer prize finalist in 2017 and bildungsroman about a young woman's first year at Harvard. Don't go into this expecting a plot; this is 100% a Vibes book.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JAPAN

by Jonathan Clements

(nonfiction)

A very rapid-fire overview of 2,000 years of history, slowing down the closer it gets to the present. Great primer for if you just want more general knowledge about the history of the country.

2) THE GOD IS NOT WILLING

by Steven Erikson

🤔🧊😭🤣⚔️

This is the 17th full length Malazan book I've read, not counting the 6 short stories, and it's one of the best. Incredible meditation on what comes after the main quest.

1) GALAXY IN FLAMES

by Ben Counter

💥🔫🤯😨💣

It's a Warhammer 40,000 book so you know going in more or less what you're gonna get, and this delivers on being exactly what it looks like it will be.

The nice thing about Malazan is that the spoilers are so esoteric that even if you saw one you wouldn't know you were spoiled. Like this meme makes absolutely no sense unless you've already read the scene it's based on.
