starter packs? feeds? lol, lmao, follow cool people, see who they repost or follow, decide if they're cool too, rinse, repeat. trawl through this site like a worm through dirt. or a bonsai growing branches. you'll find the good stuff, it's just not going to be handed to you by the almighty algorithm

i don't hate it though. i have enough stuff posted that i can scroll through it once or twice. just, damn, if i was gonna try this microblog thing why did i pick bluesky lmao, there's no art and there's maybe ten people talking about tech*

*"talking about tech" doesn't include yelling about genai

it's not the end of the world and there were plenty of common workarounds but it is a testament to how little's changed in how people use the language for a long time. i should add that c23 adoption's hardly universal, too. plenty of people still code following the ansi c standard

hey, c23 finally introduced a bool data type. it only took them 52 years.

beej's guide seems relatively okay. its big downsides are no exercises and the text is a bit... casual wowzer yippee bazinga in tone. and that's it. cue that stupid xkcd comic with the buildy blocks that everyone posts ad nauseum. the assembly is the c language, the little block is beej.

i apologize. this screed's unfair. there's other books that people like. one decides to use calculating the heron approximation to demonstrate a language feature. do you know what a heron approximation is? no, 3 people do and they're mathematicians so they've likely ascended to a higher plane by now

"basically everything's historically been written in this language by the way. there's been contenders for using a new language but nobody's really settled on one. they might not pan out too"

more and more convinced by the day that nobody who does computers wants anyone else to understand computers
January 6, 2026 at 3:35 PM
"oh yeah, the syntax provided will throw up errors and warnings unless you explicitly state you want to base your code off an ancient version of c, a language that famously has barely changed at all since its early ears. you'll learn all sorts of bad practices you'll have to forget once you're done"
January 6, 2026 at 3:35 PM
"some of the exercises aren't even doable without outside knowledge. guess how you detect a backspace with getchar(). oh did you think you just write 'if(c == 8)'? tsk... *pushes opaque eyeglasses up bridge of nose and smirks. they catch a glint of light* rookie mistake............................."

that's like my life's work

i can't make a better case for highly uncomfortable art than the moment kotoko finally breaks out of her "lol! lmao! i was abused!" thing and screams that adults *have* to fucking suck because nobody bothered to save her. armor piercing moments in a game fans only know bc 1 guy says something creepy
