Another #tolktober for today’s Mirror of Galadriel. 

my favourite chapter in the fellowship! Hope you like it!
A pencil illustration depicting a chapter of Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The chapter being ‘The Mirror of Galadriel’. The illustration shows the dream-like environment as Sam and Frodo decent down wooden carved stairwells following Galadriel into a glade of trimmed mosses and grass and roots. All the trees know not to grow here for here lies Galadriel’s mirror. In the distance we see elven roofs intertwining with natural structures. The moon glows above all and stars twinkle brighter here than anywhere else in middle earth.

“Where are you taking us?” “Into the wild!” Here is my depiction of the Hobbits being lead towards the Tower of Amon Sûl or Weathertop for Tolktober🐰🐰🐰🐰🐺 I took a lot of creative liberties here and it is not quite accurate to the books, more so to the film as I love the scenes leading up to the knife in the dark at weathertop! This piece has been a long time in the making, finishing the drawing early this year and adding the border today! I’ve always loved the thought of depicting Tolkien’s story in some sort of redwall-like world and I think the little rabbits that burrow and live underground in our real world are the best candidates for hobbits! Then you have Aragorn or as the Hobbits currently know him as Strider the wolf as their guide! I hope you like it! Pencil Illustration with Digital border ✏️

“The Mirror of Galadriel”

A sketch for chapter 7 of the fellowship :) 

Getting carried away in the sketchbook as usual but I think with some adjusting and more space, I have a good idea of an illustration for one of my favourite moments from then books.

Sketchbook pencil drawing illustrating Chapter 7 of JRR Tolkien’s Fellowship of the Ring - “The Mirror of Galadriel”. From the bottom of the image is a shallow stairway path intertwined with tree roots where Frodo Baggins, under a tree-made archway is following Galadriel as she carries a vase of water up to her Mirror. Surrounding the place where her Mirror sits are trees of all kinds within Lothlorién looming and flowing together with elven-made architecture. Through the forest we can see tree-spiralling stairways and safe havens amongst the canopies. Above all the moon sits in a dark sky full and shining, alighting all below her.

A little drawing depicting my favourite moment/piece of dialogue from PJ’s Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring. The four hobbits, Frodo and his companions, Sam, Merry and Pippin have finally arrived at the village of Bree. Its walls and gate of entry loom over them and their necks creek from looking up, eyes squinting from rain splashing down upon those weary travellers. A squeak from beyond the wall shouts out to them. “Hobbits, four ‘obbits!”. It was time they had better enter Bree and find somewhere warm to rest for the night.

This is an Artwork depicting a real life tree found in Perthshire Scotland. Combined with a whimsical gnome character, a story is born from the tree! Under the canopies of a gnarled and well grown Beech tree rests a little gnome. He perches his weary head up against the leftovers of the Beech tree’s trunk which seems to have been sawn down. Don’t worry though as this old wonder has many other trunks that grow above our friendly sleeper to allow him to be shaded from the hot sun, still receiving warmth from the beds of mosses surrounding him. His long beard drapes over his belly onto the ground as he lets out faint whistles, snoozing and snoring the day away. The traditional pencil drawing of our gnome and his resting point is framed with a simple but quite intricate border. The border is in yellow, mustardy greens and has little illustrations on each vertical side depicting each type of common Scottish tree’s seed and leaf. The style of the border is done in a digital-watercolour way.

This will be an illustration of my depiction of an early scene within the book Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock. A book I wish I read when I was younger! Highly recommend it for those into the fantasy genre or who are nostalgic for times before their own!

A digital illustration with nostalgic and warm colours. The illustration depicts a view through wonky woodlands with mushrooms sprouting, moss covered rocks and trees with faces carved out of their bark. This woodland is alive. The tunnelling trees lead your eye out into the rolling hills where a mushroom shaped home sits on the horizon, a wisp of smoke rises from its roof letting us know someone is within sitting by a warm fire. Maybe we can rest there for a night…

An illustration of an artist’s cartoony interpretation of what it would look like within Bilbo Baggin’s Hobbit hole. We see the evening sun lighting up the warm and cosy hovel which is full of items from Bilbo’s adventures. Maps are sprawled across tables amongst pots of tea and slices of pie, shelves are piled with all-sorts and bits and bobs. Books lay on floors gathering dust and if we look closely there’s a block of cheese left out for a friendly mouse. There is also a room in the back which is the kitchen, full of chunky wooden furniture covered in all types of kitchenware. It’s a messy but cosy lifestyle for mr Bilbo. The illustration is decorated with a border which shows the exterior of Bag End and the hills around it! A pencil drawing of a little gnome taking a nap up against the trunk of a large tree with multiple trunks reaching out like a spreader hand. He nestles his small self amongst the plants and mosses, finding comfort, slowly nodding off to the sounds of warblers chirping above him. The pencil drawing has a digital border of green colours featuring different types of tree leaves and seeds. Sun was setting and his shift was about to begin. It’s a tough gig defending his woodlands from brigands of the border but Preswick Hopperfoot finds solitude behind a pine with pipe in hand and the last light of day to warm his heavy heart. 🌲🐇🗡️

Went out today and done some pleinair painting, trying to half do studies of nature and creating imaginative scenes within the nature itself.
