Once again, LA politicians showed they aren't serious about solving the housing shortage.
In the Bay, 22 of 30 Assemblymembers voted Yes.
In SoCal, only 17 of 44 voted Yes.
Dems like LA Mayor Karen Bass fought SB 79 while young champions like Asm Sade Elhawary looked to the future.

Last night #SB79, one of the biggest housing bills in CA history, made it out of the State Assembly with one vote to spare.
The data is fascinating.
Let's dive into the details, and see how your State Assemblymember voted. 👇

LA City Council just voted to oppose the biggest pro-housing bill of the past 5 years #SB79 in a shocking display of NIMBYism.
Some votes I expected but I can’t believe “progressive” Ysabel Jurado carried water for MAGA NIMBYs and opposed housing in wealthy areas. Shame.

Just got this email directly from the Social Security administration “applauding” the Trump’s Death Bill.
These are dangerous levels of partisan state-sponsored propaganda.

To win the YIMBY and Abundance movement, the work needs to be done in LA.
That starts by electing Sara Hernandez in SD 26 and @johnericksonwh.bsky.social in SD 24 in these crucial districts next year.

Also of note, rural reps in the Central Valley and elsewhere, where its provisions hardly applied, overwhelmingly voted for the bill.
Urban reps fought against their future constituents.

Look at the difference between NorCal and SoCal.
In the Bay, out of the 11 Senators repping urban areas, 8 voted yes.
In LA County, out of 13 Senators only 4 voted yes.
The LA delegation is killing housing bills.

Fascinating to see the stark rural/urban and north/south divide on #SB79, the biggest housing bill of the year.

At the exact same time @benallenca.bsky.social refused to take a stand and vote for #SB79, the biggest housing bill of the year, I was proud to host a meet & greet tonight with YIMBY @johnericksonwh.bsky.social, who's running to replace him.

The current intersection is a classic stroad—a hybrid street/road that fails at both.
It’s bad at moving traffic AND dangerous for walking, biking, and transit.

The Glendale Blvd & Fletcher Dr intersection in Silver Lake is a mess.
Now the City is considering spending $13 million... just to save four parking spots and add a sidewalk.
Feeling inspired, I took this weekend to redesign the intersection. I present to you, a roundabout! 🧵

Why we need #SB445 in a nutshell. CA High Speed Rail is trying to right-size stations to reduce costs, but now the Mayor of Fresno is going to try and fight it.
So long as permits for transit projects are in the hands of individual cities, we will continue to waste taxpayer money.

Really great to have organized 43 constituents with YIMBY LA for a meeting with Sen. Durazo about #SB79 and other crucial housing bills in CA.
As a member of the Senate Housing Committee and Chair of Local Government, we made our voices loud and clear that we want her to support housing!

These improvements can be funded by state funds, high-intensity development on parking lots surrounding the Metro station, and enhanced infrastructure financing districts, which reinvest the property value created by better infrastructure directly back into projects

Westwood is already one of the most transit-rich neighborhoods in Los Angeles, yet it is currently a mess of stroads and vacant retail fronts. With the subway opening before 2028, funding for bus lanes on Wilshire and Westwood, and UCLA next door, this community is the perfect showcase.

What could a car-lite #LosAngeles look like?
Our current approach isn't working. We invest in expensive transit projects, but fail to build the infrastructure around stations needed to create riders. What could a transit-first community look like?
I present to you, a Westwood for the future:

If you live anywhere within these borders, call (213) 974-3333 to reach Sup. Horvath’s office and let her know that this is not the way we will rebuild.

For the Alphabet neighborhood, the current lots are too narrow to achieve the necessary home spacing if every house is standing on its own.
The only safe way forward is through semi-detached duplexes: two individual homes with one shared wall.

In the case of the #Palisades, you can see the difference between homes that had adequate spacing and those that were close together.
In the Lachman Ln neighborhood (built in 1950s) where spacing was >15ft, many homes survived.

As a current #PalisadesFire evacuee and YIMBY, it's crucial we understand exactly ~how~ houses burn down in a wildfire.
Spoiler alert: homes don't burn the way you think they do, and we can scientifically build communities to be fireproof.
