Who are these people? a LOT of them apparently think that there are either 100 million people in NYC, or 30 million people in the entire US. I get that fear can cause numbers to seem larger, but are New Yorkers really that scary?

This is so exactly right. There is nothing in the concept or reality of free speech that guarantees a platform or an audience.
