God forbid empathy, equality, and liberty be a quality we strive for.

I find older sci-fi, horror, fantasy and genres of that type to be important literature specifically because a lot of authors of those genres highlight human rights issues in a way that is relatable and terrifying. Some great examples are Shirley Jackson, Octavia Butler, Frank Herbert, etc.
