Her unapologetic authenticity and trailblazing presence in the entertainment industry paved the way for future generations of transgender and gender-nonconforming performers. She passed on September 8, 2016 and remains an enduring symbol of resilience, self-expression, and Southern charm.

Beyond the stage, Chablis was an outspoken advocate for transgender visibility and LGBTQ+ rights. She chronicled her journey in her 1996 memoir *Hiding My Candy: The Autobiography of the Grand Empress of Savannah*, which provided an intimate look into her life, struggles, and rise to fame.

Her career reached new heights when she played herself in Clint Eastwood’s 1997 film adaptation of *Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil*, further solidifying her status as an LGBTQ+ icon.

She gained widespread recognition as the star performer at Club One, where her sharp wit, bold personality, and glamorous stage presence made her a beloved entertainer.

Born Benjamin Edward Knox on March 11, 1957 in Quincy, Florida, she later adopted the name Chablis and became a fixture in Savannah, Georgia’s nightlife scene.
